What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction is an ancient practice in many church traditions and has seen a resurgence in recent years. In spiritual direction, a ‘directee’ meets with a ‘director’ on a regular basis, for about an hour each session.

The content of their time together is determined by whatever the directee would like to share about his or her life and experience of God.

The goal is for the directee to become more aware of and more freely responsive to God’s love and leading.

Spiritual direction is sometimes called spiritual ‘accompaniment’ because the relationship is like walking alongside another on a spiritual journey.

How does the practicum work?

Students enrolled in The Studion are required to provide 50 hours of spiritual direction during the practicum year. Volunteer directees are matched with a student in the program to receive spiritual direction.

Our Expectations of Volunteer Participants in the Practicum:

Your role, as a directee, is to bring an openness and a willingness to participate in the process, trusting in the leading of the ultimate Director, the Spirit of God.
Specifically, we ask that you commit to:

at least ten sessions of approximately 1 hour in length between September 2025 and August 2026
attend the sessions at a time and location agreed upon by you and the student director.
pay any travel costs to get to “in-person” sessions.
have personal access to an online platform (such as Zoom, Google Meet or FaceTime) in a quiet, confidential area should you decide to meet online.
provide feedback to the practicum coordinator about your experience near the end of the practicum.

Financial Expectation: There will be no financial compensation for volunteers participating in the practicum and no cost for the service offered (except travel to in-person sessions).

What you can expect from your student volunteer in the practicum:

Role of the Student Director:

Spiritual direction is not counselling, advice-giving or problem-solving.
Your student spiritual director will not lay out a ‘course of study’ or give you spiritual ‘homework.’
Their role is to actively listen and aid the directee in reflecting more deeply (perhaps from a different perspective or with new clarity) to see
For the duration of the practicum, students are accountable to their instructors and will receive ongoing instruction and supervision.

Your student director will:

contact you to arrange a time and location for your sessions
be ready at each session to listen together with you and aid you in your reflections
keep track of the number of sessions you have had
receive ongoing instruction and feedback from their supervisor

Risks and confidentiality:

There are no known risks associated with spiritual direction, although sharing personal information does entail some vulnerability.
The level of vulnerability with which you are comfortable is entirely up to you.
Volunteers meeting with students online should understand that we cannot guarantee the security of online platforms, though we have found them to be a secure and reliable means of communication.
Student directors will hold all information shared in strictest confidence. The only exception occurs if information is shared that threatens harm to the speaker or someone else, a rule which applies in all helping professions.
Students will not identify volunteers when discussing sessions with their supervisors, where the focus will be on the student, not the volunteer.
There is no guaranteed benefit to spiritual direction, but we sincerely hope and pray that it will be a beneficial experience for you in your personal and spiritual journey.
